No building should become so tall that its shadow reached his home.
If that happened, the entire town would supposedly be destroyed.

But according to the legend, a later ruler, Ajab Singh, increased the height of the fort.
Eventually, its shadow reached the holy man’s dwelling.
The story says that the curse was then fulfilled and Bhangarh met its downfall.

But the story became an important part of Bhangarh’s identity.
The Princess Story

And this one involves Princess Ratnavati.
According to local folklore, Ratnavati was famous for her beauty and received marriage proposals from powerful families.
But a local wizard or tantric named Singhia became obsessed with her.
He knew that he could never marry the princess.
So, according to the legend, he decided to use black magic.
The Love Potion
One day, Singhia reportedly saw one of the princess’s attendants buying perfume or scented oil.
The legend says that he secretly placed a magical spell on it.
His plan was simple:
When Ratnavati used the perfume, she would supposedly fall in love with him.
But the plan failed.
The princess discovered what was happening.
Instead of using the enchanted substance, she threw it onto a large boulder.
And then something strange supposedly happened.
The boulder began moving toward Singhia.
According to the legend, it crushed him.
But before dying, the tantric allegedly cursed Bhangarh.
He supposedly declared that the city would be destroyed and that its people would never live peacefully there again.
Then Came the Destruction
The story becomes darker from here.
According to the popular legend, Bhangarh was later attacked.
The kingdom was devastated and many of its inhabitants were killed.
Princess Ratnavati was also said to have died.
After that, Bhangarh supposedly became a deserted place.
The curse story says that nobody was able to rebuild the kingdom successfully.
And the ruins remained.
Over time, the abandoned town developed a reputation as a place where supernatural activity could be felt.
But this is where the difference between legend and history becomes important.
What History Says
The supernatural explanation is fascinating, but it isn’t established historical fact.
Rajasthan Tourism records that Bhangarh’s population gradually declined after around 1720. The town had once been a substantial settlement, but over time it became abandoned.
There are no reliable historical records proving that a curse, black magic or ghosts caused the abandonment.
In fact, modern discussions of Bhangarh often point out that the fort’s haunted reputation is based largely on local legends.
That doesn’t make the place less interesting.
If anything, it makes the mystery more intriguing.
